Where do I find my tag number and activation code?

They are on the card, sleeve or label that shipped with the tag, and in your order email. Gifted tags arrive as a link that already contains both — clicking it fills the form in for you. Tag numbers always start with TAP; codes are 6 digits.

The code says invalid or incorrect

Accepted Answer

Nine times out of ten it is a typo or a mismatched pair: check the tag number matches the code printed beside it, drop any spaces, and note that codes are digits only (a 0 is a zero, never the letter O). If you have several tags, make sure you are not using tag A's number with tag B's code.

Do activation codes expire?

Accepted Answer

No. A code stays valid until the tag is claimed. It stops working the moment activation succeeds, because the tag then belongs to an account and is managed from the dashboard instead.

I've tried the code too many times

Accepted Answer

Repeated failed attempts are rate-limited to stop people guessing codes on tags they don't own. Wait a few minutes and try again with the exact pair from your order email, or email hello@taproo.com with the tag number and we'll confirm the code.

Question 5

My tag number isn't recognised at all

Accepted Answer

Type the full number including the TAP prefix and any leading zeros. If it is still not found, the tag may not have been dispatched from a Taproo batch yet — send us the order number and a photo of the card and we'll match it up.

Question 6

It says the tag has already been activated

Accepted Answer

Each tag is claimed once. Sign in first and re-enter the number and code: if the tag is on your account we show you its current destination and let you change it, rather than blocking you. If it was claimed before it reached you (second-hand or a mis-picked order), email hello@taproo.com with the tag number and we'll release it.

It says the tag is inactive

Accepted Answer

Inactive means it was deliberately switched off — a reported-lost tag, a refunded order, or a recalled batch. Taps stop resolving. Email hello@taproo.com from the address on the order and we'll reactivate it or replace it.

Question 8

Tapping the tag opens a page that says the tag isn't set up yet

Accepted Answer

That's the expected state for an un-activated chip: the tag resolves to taproo.com and asks for its code. Finish activation and the same tap will go straight to your destination — no re-writing the chip.

The tag was activated but tapping it goes nowhere

Accepted Answer

Usually the linked page was deleted or unpublished. Open the page in your dashboard and publish it, or re-point the tag at another page or URL. Taps only dead-end when the destination itself is missing.

Can I activate the same tag twice?

Accepted Answer

No, and you never need to. After the first activation the owner re-points the tag as often as they like from the dashboard — the physical chip keeps the same Taproo link forever.

I have several tags from one order — do I activate each separately?

Accepted Answer

You can, but you don't have to. Activate the first one and choose "Apply to all" to point every unclaimed tag in the order at the same destination in one go. You can still split them out later.

Do I need a paid plan if I just bought an NFC tag?

Accepted Answer

No. Every NFC tag from Taproo (keychain, sticker, business card) works on the Free plan, which includes 1 dynamic vCard + 1 other dynamic page, basic scan & tap analytics (7 days history), and the ability to keep editing the page your tag opens — forever. Free also includes 1 tag pointed at your own web address (any Taproo page is always free), unlimited re-pointing between your own Taproo pages, and 1 change of an external web address. Upgrade only if you want more destinations, unlimited links and destination changes, advanced analytics, custom slugs, password-protect, scheduling, the Bio / Menu / Reviews page types, or team access.

Can I point my NFC tag at my own website on the Free plan?

Yes — Free includes 1 tag pointed at your own web address (any taproo page is always free), and unlimited re-pointing between your own Taproo pages (plus 1 change of an external web address, so you can correct a mistake). Pointing tags at Taproo pages you host is always included. Pro and Business remove both limits: unlimited tags on external web addresses and unlimited destination changes.

Is there a free plan, and what are the limits?

Yes — Taproo Free is free forever with 1 dynamic vCard + 1 other dynamic page, 10 static qr codes / month (fixed destination, png), 500 scans & taps / month, basic analytics (7 days history) and PNG export, plus 1 tag pointed at your own web address (any taproo page is always free) and unlimited re-pointing between your own taproo pages, plus 1 external web address change. No credit card required. Just bought an NFC keychain or sticker? It works on Free with no subscription.

Which hosted page types are included, and on which plan?

Free and up: link/landing redirect, vCard contact, Socials hub (Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, X, LinkedIn), single-social tap, Wi-Fi share, WhatsApp click-to-chat, event RSVP, dedicated Luggage tag, Schools & kids Lost & Found, and Emergency ID (ICE / medical info — an information tool, not a medical device). Pro adds the Bio link hub, restaurant Menu, Google reviews and Review pages (with private feedback capture). Business adds GS1 / EU Digital Product Passport. Every page type works with both QR codes and NFC tags.

Do NFC taps count toward my monthly limit?

Yes. Scans and taps share the same monthly interaction allowance — 500 on Free, 25,000 on Pro, unlimited on Business. We don't meter NFC and QR separately. The counter resets at the start of each calendar month.

Activation stopped and said I've reached my page limit

Accepted Answer

That limit is on creating a new hosted page, not on the tag. Choose "One of my pages" to reuse a page you already have, or "A URL" to point the tag at your own https:// address (Free includes one such tag). Upgrading on the pricing page raises the page allowance and removes the external-link and destination-change limits.

Question 18

Did a failed activation waste my tag or my page allowance?

Accepted Answer

No. Nothing is consumed unless the activation completes: a blocked page creation leaves the tag unclaimed and your allowance untouched, so you can run the flow again with a different destination.

The page type I want is locked

Accepted Answer

Some page types sit on Pro or Business. Pick an included type now, point the tag at it, and switch the tag to a different page later if you upgrade — you won't have to touch the chip.

Do I need to keep paying for the tag to keep working?

Accepted Answer

No. Tags activated on the Free plan keep working indefinitely, including changing the destination.

What can I point a tag at?

Accepted Answer

A new Taproo page we create during activation, one of your existing pages, or any web address starting with https://. Plain http:// addresses are rejected because phones warn on insecure links. On the Free plan one tag can point at your own external web address; Pro and Business have no limit.

How do I change the destination after activation?

Accepted Answer

Open the tag in your dashboard and pick a new page or URL. The change is live for the next tap — the chip is never re-written, because it holds the Taproo short link rather than your destination. On every plan, including Free, you can re-point a tag between your own Taproo pages as often as you like; on Free, a tag pointed at an external web address can be changed once, and Pro and Business remove that limit.

Can several tags share one destination?

Yes. Point as many tags as you like at the same page — useful for a team, a set of table tags, or spare keychains for the same pet or bag.

What exactly is written on the chip?

Accepted Answer

A short Taproo link in the form taproo.com/t/TAP10001. That's the link to write if you're programming a blank tag yourself with NFC Tools — never the activation URL, which is a one-time redemption link.

Can I activate a tag for someone else and hand it over?

Accepted Answer

Yes — activate it, set the destination, then give them the tag. If they want it on their own account instead, send them the activation link untouched and let them claim it.

Do I need an account to activate?

Accepted Answer

Yes, a free one. The account is what lets you change the destination later and see tap analytics. You can create it inside the activation flow — your tag number and code are kept, so you land back on the same step after signing in.

I signed in and lost my place in the flow

Accepted Answer

Re-open your activation link (or go to taproo.com/activate) and the number and code are restored. Nothing is claimed until you confirm a destination.

Question 28

How do I test the tag?

Accepted Answer

Hold the top third of an iPhone, or the middle of the back of an Android, against the tag for a second with the screen on and unlocked. A banner appears with your destination — tap it. If nothing happens, check NFC is on in Android settings; iPhone XS and newer read tags in the background with no setting to change.

My phone won't read the tag at all

Accepted Answer

Remove thick or metal cases, move away from metal surfaces (metal detunes the antenna unless the tag is an on-metal type), and try the other end of the phone. If a second phone reads it fine, the first phone's NFC is off or blocked by the case.

Do taps show up in analytics?

Accepted Answer

Yes — every tap is recorded against the tag and its destination, with counts, country and device. Analytics history depends on your plan.
