How a Wi-Fi QR code actually works

A Wi-Fi QR code is just a QR encoding of a tiny text string in the formatWIFI:T:WPA;S:<ssid>;P:<password>;H:false;;— a standard recognised by iOS and Android. When a phone camera reads it, the operating system shows a one-tap prompt: "Join <Network Name>?". The password is never typed, never seen, and never copied to the clipboard.

Because the credentials live inside the QR itself, a printed static code keeps working with no internet connection on your end — guests' phones do the handshake directly with your router. The trade-off: if you change the password, the printed code stops working. Troubleshooting: when a Wi-Fi QR doesn't work

Camera scans the QR but nothing happens. The phone almost certainly doesn't trust the encoded security type. Re-generate with the right WPA/WPA2/WPA3 setting — picking "WPA" when your router is WPA3-only is the most common cause.
It joins, then drops immediately. Hidden network not flagged. Toggle "Hidden SSID" on and regenerate.
Special characters in the password. Quotes, semicolons, backslashes and colons need escaping. Our generator handles this automatically — if you hand-built the string elsewhere, regenerate it here.
Old Android phone (pre-Android 10) won't scan. Use Google Lens or a free QR reader app as a fallback, or print the password as text underneath the code.
Printed QR looks fuzzy. Print at minimum 2cm × 2cm and download the SVG, not the PNG, for any sign larger than A6.
