No. iPhone (iOS 11+) and modern Android phones read Wi-Fi QR codes natively from the camera or lock screen. Guests tap one prompt and they're connected — no typing the password.

Does it support WPA, WPA2, WPA3 and hidden networks?

Yes. The generator supports WPA, WPA2, WPA3 and open networks, and there's a 'hidden SSID' toggle so phones don't need the network to be broadcasting.

Can I change the password later without reprinting?

On a static Wi-Fi QR, no — the credentials are encoded directly in the QR. An editable Taproo web destination can be updated without changing its QR, but it opens a web page rather than rewriting Wi-Fi credentials stored inside a previously printed static QR.

Will this work on my router or guest network?

Yes. The QR encodes standard Wi-Fi credentials (SSID, security type, password) the way iOS and Android already understand, so it works with any home, office or guest router that uses WPA/WPA2/WPA3 or is open.

Can I use a Wi-Fi QR code in an Airbnb or holiday let?

Yes. Put the guest-network QR on a welcome card, fridge or Wi-Fi sign so guests can scan instead of typing the password. If you rotate the guest password, an editable Taproo Wi-Fi page can show the updated details without replacing a QR or NFC product that points to that page.

Does tapping an NFC tag join the Wi-Fi automatically?

It depends what you write to the tag. If the tag holds a link to your Taproo Wi-Fi page, tapping opens that page with the network name and password ready to copy — the phone does not join by itself, because no website is allowed to change Wi-Fi settings. If instead you write a Wi-Fi record to the tag (NFC Tools: Write, then Wi-Fi network), an Android phone shows a join prompt on tap. iPhone ignores Wi-Fi NFC records, so for iPhone guests use the Wi-Fi QR code.

Should I use the Wi-Fi page or a Wi-Fi record on my tag?

A tag carries one destination, so choose per tag — the Wi-Fi page editor gives you both. Option 1, a page link tag: works on every phone, you can change the password later without re-writing tags, you get scan analytics, and the guest copies the password with one tap. Option 2, a direct Wi-Fi tag: an Android tap shows a join prompt with no typing, but iPhone ignores Wi-Fi NFC records, the tag no longer opens your page, and changing the password means re-writing every tag. Many venues use both: a page link tag on the table plus a printed Wi-Fi QR code beside it, both downloadable from the editor.

How a Wi-Fi QR code actually works

A Wi-Fi QR code is just a QR encoding of a tiny text string in the formatWIFI:T:WPA;S:<ssid>;P:<password>;H:false;;— a standard recognised by iOS and Android. When a phone camera reads it, the operating system shows a one-tap prompt: "Join <Network Name>?". The password is never typed, never seen, and never copied to the clipboard.

Because the credentials live inside the QR itself, a printed static code keeps working with no internet connection on your end — guests' phones do the handshake directly with your router. The trade-off: if you change the password, the printed code stops working. An editable Taproo Wi-Fi page offers a different approach: its QR can open a web page showing the current network details. Update the page later and the QR still opens the same page. This is not the same as changing credentials embedded inside a static Wi-Fi QR.

Troubleshooting: when a Wi-Fi QR doesn't work

Camera scans the QR but nothing happens. The phone almost certainly doesn't trust the encoded security type. Re-generate with the right WPA/WPA2/WPA3 setting — picking "WPA" when your router is WPA3-only is the most common cause.
It joins, then drops immediately. Hidden network not flagged. Toggle "Hidden SSID" on and regenerate.
Special characters in the password. Quotes, semicolons, backslashes and colons need escaping. Our generator handles this automatically — if you hand-built the string elsewhere, regenerate it here.
Old Android phone (pre-Android 10) won't scan. Use Google Lens or a free QR reader app as a fallback, or print the password as text underneath the code.
Printed QR looks fuzzy. Print at minimum 2cm × 2cm and download the SVG, not the PNG, for any sign larger than A6.
