NFC keychains explained

An NFC keychain — also called an NFC keyring or NFC key — is a small tag on a split-ring with a tiny passive chip inside. No battery, no charging, no app required to read it. When an NFC-capable phone comes within about 4 cm, the phone briefly powers the chip and reads its stored data, then takes whatever action that data describes (usually opening a URL).

The chip itself is normally an NTAG213, NTAG215 or NTAG216 — the same family used in business cards and event wristbands. Memory ranges from 144 bytes (plenty for a short URL) to 888 bytes (room for a full vCard).

1. 1. Pick a keychain that fits your use

   Epoxy NFC keyrings are tough and waterproof — perfect for keys, gym bags or pet collars. PVC tags are slimmer and cheaper. For a metal-cased fob, choose an on-metal NFC keyring with a built-in ferrite shield so the chip still reads.

2. 2. Decide what should happen on tap

   Most popular: a digital business card (vCard), Wi-Fi join page, Instagram or LinkedIn profile, lost-and-found page, Emergency ID (ICE), or a payment / Revolut.me link. With Taproo you point the keyring at a dynamic destination so you can change it later without re-encoding the chip.

3. 3. Write the keychain (or skip this step)

   Use NFC Tools (free on iOS/Android), choose 'Write → URL', paste your link, then hold the phone against the chip until you see a confirmation. Every keyring from the Taproo shop ships pre-encoded — you just set the destination in the dashboard, no writing required.

4. 4. Test it on a phone

   Lock the phone, then unlock and tap it against the keyring. iPhone shows a banner you tap to open; Android opens the link directly. If nothing happens, slide the phone around — the NFC antenna sits in different spots on different models.

5. 5. Lock the chip if it lives in public

   If the keychain will be on display (a giveaway, a rented locker tag, a pet collar), use your writer app to lock it read-only so nobody can overwrite the link. Skip this if you might want to change the destination directly on the chip later — Taproo dynamic links remove this trade-off.

• Antenna miss. Slide the phone slowly around the chip. The NFC coil sits at the top-back on iPhone, back-centre on most Androids.
• Touching metal. If the chip is pressed flat against keys or a fob, lift the keychain a centimetre away and try again.
• Wrong record type. iPhones only auto-launch URI/URL records. Re-write plain-text records as URLs.
• NFC turned off. On Android, check Settings → Connections → NFC. iPhones can't disable NFC, but some focus modes hide the banner.
